PVC shrink film is the correct choice for rigid, regular-geometry products — bottles, jars, multipacks, and stationery — where you need high clarity, tight conformity, and low film cost. It is the wrong choice for food-contact applications requiring high-temperature tunnels, irregular shapes, or products sensitive to chlorine off-gassing during heat shrink.
Get that selection decision right before you specify a machine or order film rolls. Everything downstream — tunnel temperature, sealer dwell time, film gauge, and compliance documentation — depends on it.

## What PVC Shrink Film Actually Is (and Where It Fits)
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shrink film is a biaxially oriented thermoplastic film. It shrinks in both directions when exposed to heat, typically between 90°C and 160°C depending on gauge and formulation.
In Indian packaging lines, PVC shrink film is widely used for:
- **Labelling and sleeve applications** on bottles (water, beverages, personal care)
- **Multipacking** of cans, cartons, or retail units
- **Stationery and book wrapping**
- **Industrial product bundling** (pipes, hardware, auto components)
It is **not** used for direct food wrapping in most modern food-grade lines. Polyolefin (POF) film has replaced PVC for food-contact shrink applications because POF is FDA/FSSAI-compatible, produces no HCl gas during shrink, and tolerates higher tunnel temperatures without degradation.
If your product requires food-contact compliance under FSSAI regulations, specify POF or PE shrink film instead. PVC remains cost-effective and appropriate for non-food-contact outer packaging and labelling.

## Key Film Specifications to Evaluate Before Ordering
Film selection errors cause more line problems than machine errors. Evaluate these parameters for every new application:
| Parameter | Typical PVC Range | What It Affects |
|---|---|---|
| Gauge (thickness) | 30–80 microns | Seal strength, clarity, material cost |
| Shrink ratio (MD × TD) | 50–70% × 10–30% | How tightly film conforms to product |
| Shrink temperature | 90°C–160°C | Tunnel zone settings, energy cost |
| Tensile strength | 40–80 MPa | Film handling on high-speed lines |
| Haze (clarity) | < 3% for display packs | Retail shelf appearance |
| Roll width | 200–600 mm (standard) | Must match your mandrel or sealer width |
**Shrink ratio is the most misunderstood spec.** A film with 60% machine-direction (MD) shrink and 15% transverse-direction (TD) shrink will pull tightly lengthwise but barely contract across the product width. For sleeve labels on round bottles, you want higher TD shrink. For multipacking flat cartons, higher MD shrink is acceptable.
Request shrink curves — not just peak shrink percentages — from your film supplier. A shrink curve shows percentage shrinkage at each temperature increment. This tells you whether your tunnel can achieve the required shrink without scorching the film or the product.

## Machine Configuration: Sealer Type and Tunnel Matching
Two machine elements define your PVC shrink packaging output quality: the sealer and the shrink tunnel. They must be specified together.
### Sealer Types
**L-bar sealers** are the standard configuration for individual product wrapping. The film is folded around the product, and an L-shaped sealing bar cuts and seals simultaneously. Suitable for speeds up to around 25–40 packs per minute on semi-automatic machines, and higher on fully automatic servo-driven models.
**Side sealers with centre fold film** suit continuous flow applications — multipacking, bundling, and high-speed lines. They run centrefold PVC film and seal one side continuously. Speeds on automatic side sealers typically reach 60–120 packs per minute depending on product size.
**Sleeve applicators** are a separate category. They apply pre-formed PVC sleeves over bottles or containers and feed them into a steam or hot-air shrink tunnel. This is the dominant configuration for beverage labelling.
### Shrink Tunnel Requirements for PVC Film
PVC shrink film requires lower tunnel temperatures than POF — typically 120°C–160°C depending on gauge and line speed. This is an advantage: lower energy consumption per pack.
Tunnel configuration decisions:
- **Hot-air tunnels** are standard for most PVC shrink applications. They are lower cost and easier to maintain than steam tunnels.
- **Steam tunnels** produce superior conformity on complex shapes and are preferred for sleeve labels on contoured bottles. Steam tunnels cost more to install and operate.
- **Tunnel length and conveyor speed** must be matched to your required dwell time. Insufficient dwell time produces incomplete shrink (fish-eyes, lifting edges). Excessive dwell scorches the film.
A practical starting point: for a 40-micron PVC sleeve on a 500 ml bottle, a hot-air tunnel at 140°C with a 6–8 second dwell time typically produces acceptable shrink. Verify with film supplier data and machine trials before committing to production settings.

## Common Mistakes in PVC Shrink Film Line Setup
These errors appear repeatedly on Indian packaging lines. Avoiding them saves material waste, rework, and downtime.
**Mistake 1: Ordering film gauge based on price alone.**
Thinner film reduces material cost but increases seal failures and film breaks on high-speed lines. For automatic lines running above 60 packs per minute, 40–50 micron is typically the minimum workable gauge for PVC.
**Mistake 2: Mismatching roll width to sealer jaw size.**
Film roll width must account for the product perimeter plus overlap for sealing. Undersized rolls produce open seals. Oversized rolls create excess trim waste and increase material cost per pack.
**Mistake 3: Running PVC film through a tunnel calibrated for POF.**
POF tunnels often run at 170°C–200°C. PVC at those temperatures degrades, releases HCl gas, and produces brittle, discoloured seals. Always recalibrate tunnel zones when switching film types.
**Mistake 4: Ignoring seasonal temperature variation in the plant.**
Ambient temperature in a Kerala or Tamil Nadu plant in May can exceed 38°C. This affects film handling tension and seal quality. Tension settings that work in December may need adjustment in summer.
**Mistake 5: Not validating film against the product.**
PVC plasticisers can migrate into certain substrates — soft plastics, foam, and some adhesives. Always confirm chemical compatibility between the film and your product or label before full production runs.

## Pre-Purchase Checklist: PVC Shrink Film Packaging Line
Before finalising your film supplier and machine specification, confirm the following:
- [ ] Product geometry documented (dimensions, weight, surface texture)
- [ ] Food-contact requirement confirmed — if yes, switch to POF or PE
- [ ] Required packs per minute established and matched to machine speed class
- [ ] Film shrink curve obtained from supplier and cross-checked against tunnel capability
- [ ] Film gauge selected based on line speed, not just material cost
- [ ] Roll width calculated: product perimeter + sealing overlap + trim allowance
- [ ] Tunnel type (hot-air vs. steam) selected based on product shape complexity
- [ ] Tunnel temperature range confirmed compatible with PVC (not POF settings)
- [ ] Electrical supply (single-phase vs. three-phase) confirmed for tunnel load
- [ ] Spare sealing elements and Teflon tape sourced locally or from supplier
- [ ] Operator training plan confirmed with machine supplier before commissioning

## What to Ask Your Equipment Supplier Before Buying
A machine quotation without trial data is incomplete. Before signing a purchase order, ask:
1. Can the supplier run a film trial with your actual product and film grade?
2. What is the sealer jaw replacement interval at your target line speed?
3. Is the tunnel temperature controller PID-based or simple on/off? (PID gives tighter temperature control and fewer rejects.)
4. What is the spare parts lead time for heating elements and sealing wires?
5. Does the machine accept centrefold film from multiple suppliers, or is it locked to a proprietary roll format?
Ace Finepack Private Limited supplies shrink film packaging machines and PVC shrink film rolls suited to food, pharma, FMCG, and industrial applications across India. Ace Finepack provides pre-sales application assessment, machine trials, and after-sales service support — so your line configuration is validated before installation, not after.
